Needle Guided US

An ultrasound guided needle biopsy is a medical test used to learn more about a lesion or mass. The biopsy is done using an ultrasound to find the lesion or mass. This is one type of “image-guided” biopsy, which combines the use of ultrasound with either a fine needle aspiration or a core needle biopsy.

When are ultrasound guided needle biopsies used?

Ultrasound guided needle biopsies are most often used for:

  • Lymph nodes.
  • Breast.
  • Liver.

This test can also be used with endoscopy or bronchoscopy when tumors are within the GI tract or the lungs. These are known as endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) or endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS).

How do I prepare for an ultrasound guided needle biopsy?

No preparation is needed for this test. However, if you are on blood thinners or take aspirin your provider may have you stop taking them for a few days before the test. Your provider will give you instructions to prepare for the EUS or EBUS if you are having one.

Platelet-Rich Plasma – PRP

The Arthritis & Diabetes Center is pleased to offer Platelet-Rich Plasma treatments to our patients. Known as “PRP” for short, this therapy has been utilized for many years to treat various musculoskeletal conditions, such as osteoarthritis, tendonitis, and bursitis. The treatment is done here in our office.

What is Platelet-Rich Plasma?

Platelet-rich plasma comes from your own blood. Platelets are important in blood clotting and healing, as they contain factors that contribute to the healing process after an injury. As interest grows in the field of Regenerative Medicine, clinicians are exploring ways to use the body’s own cells to assist in healing damaged or diseased tissue. Platelets contain growth factors that assist in increasing cell recruitment and proliferation necessary for tissue repair and healing.

What kind of conditions can be treated with PRP?

PRP has been used to treat various conditions, such as chronic tendonitis, Tennis Elbow, Golfer’s Elbow, Achilles tendon injuries, rotator cuff tears, and knee osteoarthritis, to name a few.

How is PRP given?

We draw a sample of blood and process it in a centrifuge, which, by spinning the blood at high speed, results in the separation of the blood cells (white cells, red cells, platelets) from the serum. The cells are spun again to further separate the platelets, which are now in a concentrated form that can be sterilely injected back into your body. Using your own platelets eliminates the risk of rejection. The overall procedure takes about 45 minutes after which we recommend you rest for the remainder of the day. You can generally resume light activities the next day. Additional modalities, such as physical therapy, may be recommended on a case by case basis.

Imaging

At the Arthritis & Diabetes Center we provide imaging services to our patients, including:

  • Diagnostic X-Ray
  • Bone Densitometry which is used to detect Osteoporosis and monitor its treatment
  • Extremity MRI which is used to detect early bony damage and to assess the effectiveness of treatment in Rheumatoid Arthritis. Early detection and appropriate treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis not only provides relief, but prevents deformity.
  • Musculoskeletal Ultrasound which aids in diagnosis of joint and tendon disease and allows us to perform ultrasound guided injections.

Imaging in Diagnosis

For decades, X-rays were used to help detect rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and monitor for  worsening bone damage. In the early stages of RA, however, X-rays may appear normal although the disease is active, making the films useful as a baseline but not much help in getting a timely diagnosis and treatment.

Newer imaging techniques like musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have changed the picture. Both can pick up inflammation and bone erosion not visible on X-rays. This is especially important because early diagnosis and treatment can help forestall future joint damage.
